Sylvester Stallone: Rocky, Rambo

0

Sylvester Stallone (born July 8, 1946) is a two-time Academy Award-nominated American actor, director, producer and screenwriter. He achieved his greatest successes in a number of action films, notably the Rocky and Rambo series.

Early life
Stallone was born in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. His mother, Jacqueline “Jackie” Labofish was an astrologer; his father, Frank Stallone, Sr., was an immigrant from Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. One of his maternal great-grandmothers, Rosa Rabinovich, was from Odessa, Ukraine. In the 1960s, Stallone attended the American College of Switzerland, Leysin and the University of Miami for three years. He came within a few credit hours of graduation, before he decided to drop out and pursue an acting career. After Stallone’s request that his acting and life experiences be accepted in exchange for his remaining credits, he was granted a Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA) degree by the President of the University of Miami in 1999.
Early film roles 1970-1975
Party at Kitty and Stud’s is a 1970 pornographic film. It has the distinction of being Sylvester Stallone’s first film. He was paid US$200 for two days work. Originally released as hardcore pornography, scenes of sexual penetration were edited out on later releases of the film designed to cash in on Stallone’s fame. These releases were re-packaged under the names of Italian Stallion (taken from Stallone’s nickname and a line from the film) and Cocky (a spoof of Rocky). Stallone’s other first few film roles were minor, and included brief uncredited appearances in Woody Allen’s Bananas (1971) as a subway thug, in the psychological thriller Klute (1971) as an extra dancing in a club, and in the Jack Lemmon vehicle Prisoner of 2nd Avenue (1975) as a youth. In the Lemmon film, Jack Lemmon chases and tackles Stallone, thinking he is a pickpocket. He had his first starring role in the cult hit The Lords of Flatbush (1974). In 1975 he appeared in supporting roles in Farewell, My Lovely, Capone, and another cult hit Death Race 2000. He also made guest appearances on the TV series Police Story and Kojak.
Success with Rocky and stardom 1976-1979
Sylvester Stallone: footprints and hands stamped at Hollywood walkthrough
Stallone did not gain world-wide fame until his starring role in the smash hit Rocky (1976). The film was awarded the 1976 Academy Award for Best Picture. On March 24, 1975, Stallone saw the Ali-Chuck Wepner fight which inspired the foundation idea of Rocky. That night Stallone went home, and in three days he had written the script for Rocky. After that, he tried to sell the script with the intention of playing the lead role. Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler in particular liked the script (which was suggested by Stallone after a casting), and planned on courting a star like Burt Reynolds or James Caan for the lead role. The final result was an unequalled success; Rocky was nominated for ten Academy Awards in all, including two for Stallone himself, for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. In addition to winning Best Picture, Rocky won for Best Director and Best Film Editing. Rocky cost about US$1.1 million to make, and grossed about US$225 million worldwide. The sequel Rocky II was released in 1979 and also became a major success, grossing US$200 million worldwide. The Rocky series has made the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art a Philadelphia tourist attraction. On the list of the top heroes of all time by American Film Institute (AFI) in 2003, Stallone is listed seventh as Rocky Balboa behind Gregory Peck (Atticus Finch), Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones), Sean Connery (James Bond), Humphrey Bogart (Rick Blaine), Gary Cooper (Will Kane) and Jodie Foster (Clarice Starling).
Rocky, Rambo and new film roles 1979-1989
Apart from the Rocky films, Stallone did many other films in the late 1970s and early 1980s with mixed success. He received critical praise for films such as F.I.S.T (1978), a drama in which he plays a warehouse worker, who becomes involved in the labor union leadership, Paradise Alley (1978), a family drama in which he plays a con-artist of three brothers and he along with his other brother try to help the one involved in wrestling and Escape to Victory (1981), a sports drama in which he plays a prisoner of war involved in a Nazi propaganda football tournament. Stallone then made the thriller film Nighthawks (1981), in which he plays a New York city cop who plays a cat and mouse game with a foreign terrorist, played by Rutger Hauer. These movies were well received, but they did not have box office success.
Personal life
Family
Other famous members in Stallone’s family are his brother, actor/singer Frank Stallone and his mother, Jacqueline Stallone, who achieved notoriety in the middle 1990s as an astrologer. At the time of ownership, Stallone’s pet Bullmastiff, Butkus, appeared in the first Rocky film as an often-teased favorite pet of Balboa’s who lived in Adrian’s pet shop. Also Half-Brother: Dante Stallone born in 1997; son of Frank Stallone Sr and his fourth wife. Half-Sister: Toni-Ann Dialto, mother, Jacqueline Stallone.
Marriages
Stallone has been married three times, to Sasha Czack (1974–1985), Brigitte Nielsen (1985–1987), and Jennifer Flavin (1997–present). He has five children, sons Sage Moonblood and Seargeoh, who is autistic (with Czack, born 1976 and 1979 respectively), and daughters Sophia Rose, Sistine Rose and Scarlett Rose (with Flavin, born 1996, 1998, 2002 respectively). He and Flavin, an Irish-American, were married at Winston Churchill’s birthplace, Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England.
In addition to these marriages, he has had romantic relationships with models Susan Anton, Angie Everhart, Naomi Campbell and Janice Dickinson. Dickinson once believed that Stallone was the father of her daughter Savannah.
Growth hormone controversy
On February 16, 2007, Stallone flew into Sydney, New South Wales as part of his promotional tour Rocky Balboa. Upon landing he was searched by Australian Customs officials, who found 48 vials of the human growth hormone (HGH) Jintropin in his personal luggage. As a result of this, he was charged one count of importing a prohibited import. The hormones are banned under the Australian Customs Act, are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and are not a recognised treatment for any medical condition. In a court hearing on May 15, 2007, he pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing a controlled substance. On May 21st 2007 he was formally convicted of importing restricted muscle-building hormones into Australia and ordered to pay more than $9,870 in fines and court costs. As a result of the controversy within Australia, Stallone banned the Australian media from attending the Los Angeles premiere of the film.
In a typed apology from Stallone, delivered to the court on May 15, Stallone said: “I made a terrible mistake. Not because I was attempting to deceive anyone but I was simply ignorant of your official rules and I wish to sincerely apologise to the court and the Australian community for my breach of Australian customs law. … I have never supported the use of illegal drugs or engaged in any illegal activities in my entire life. …I wish to express my deepest remorse and again apologise for my actions.”

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger: Actor, Bodybuilder, Politician

0

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (German pronunciation (IPA) (born Thal, Austria, July 30, 1947) is an Austrian bodybuilder, actor and a politician, currently serving as the 38th Governor of the U.S. state of California. As a young man, Schwarzenegger gained widespread attention as a highly successful bodybuilder, and later gained worldwide fame as a Hollywood action film star, perhaps most famed for his role in the The Terminator series. Schwarzenegger was nicknamed “The Austrian Oak” in his body building days, “Arnie” during his acting career, and more recently “The Governator” (a portmanteau of Governor and Terminator, referring to his internationally popular film role).
Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Thal, Austria, a city bordering the Styrian capital Graz, and christened Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger. His parents were the local police chief Gustav Schwarzenegger (1907 – 1972), and his wife, the former Aurelia Jadrny (1922 – 1998). They were married on October 20, 1945 – Gustav was 38, Aurelia a 23-year-old widow with a son named Meinhard. According to Schwarzenegger, both of his parents were “very strict”.”Back then in Austria it was a very different world –” he says, “if we did something bad or we disobeyed our parents, the rod was not sparred [sic].”It was a Roman Catholic family who attended Church every Sunday.Gustav, a frequently drunk local police chief, signed up for the Nazi party after the 1938 Anschluss. Still, in 1947, Gustav was allowed to work as a police officer as there was no evidence he had committed war crimes. He had a preference for Meinhard, the elder of the two sons.Schwarzenegger has said his father had “no patience for listening or understanding your problems…there was a wall; a real wall.”Schwarzenegger had a good relationship with his mother and kept in touch with her until her death.Schwarzenegger has reportedly disavowed Nazi views. In later life, Schwarzenegger commissioned the Simon Wiesenthal Centre to research his father’s wartime record, which came up with no evidence of atrocities. At school, Schwarzenegger was apparently “in the middle” but stood out for his “cheerful, good-humoured and exuberant” character.
As a boy, Schwarzenegger played many sports – heavily influenced by his father. He picked up his first “barbell” in 1960 when his soccer coach took his team to a local gym. At the age of 15 Schwarzenegger chose body-building over a career as a soccer player.Schwarzenegger has responded to a question asking if he was age 13 when he started weight-lifting: “I actually started weight training when I was fifteen but I’d been participating in sports, like soccer, for years so I felt that although I was slim, I was well-developed, at least enough so that I could start going to the gym and start Olympic lifting.”Schwarzenegger took to visiting a gym in Graz, where he also frequented the local cinemas to see bodybuilding idols such as Reg Park, Steve Reeves and Johnny Weissmuller on the big screen. “I was inspired by individuals like Reg Park and Steve Reeves.”In 1961 Schwarzenegger met former Mr Austria Kurt Marnul who invited him to train at the gym in Graz.He was so dedicated as a youngster that he was known to break into the local gym on weekends, when it was usually closed, so that he could train.”It would make me sick to miss a workout… I knew I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror the next morning if I didn’t do it.”Schwarzenegger was asked about his first movie experience as a boy, he replied: “I was very young, but I remember my father taking me to the Austrian theaters and seeing some newsreels. The first real movie I saw, that I distinctly remember, was a John Wayne movie.”
In 1971, Meinhard died in a car accident. He has since said that his brother was driving drunk. Gustav died the following year from a stroke. In Pumping Iron, Schwarzenegger claimed that he did not attend his father’s funeral because he was training for a bodybuilding contest. Later, he and the film’s producer both stated that this story was taken from another bodybuilder for the purpose of showing the extremes that some would go to for their sport, and to make Schwarzenegger’s image more cold and machine-like to fan controversy for the film.Barbara Baker, his first serious girlfriend has said he informed her of his father’s death without emotion and never spoke of his brother.
Move to the United States
Schwarzenegger moved to the United States in September 1968 at the age of 21, speaking little English. He confirms his poor grasp of English: “Naturally when I came to this country, my English was very bad, and my accent was also very strong which was an obstacle as I began to pursue acting.”There he trained at Gold’s Gym in Santa Monica, California, under the patronage of Joe Weider. From 1970-1974, one of Schwarzenegger’s weight training partners was Ric Drasin, the bodybuilder and professional wrestler who designed the original Gold’s Gym logo in 1973.Schwarzenegger also became good friends with professional wrestler “Superstar” Billy Graham.
Political Career
Schwarzenegger is a registered Republican. In 1985, Schwarzenegger appeared in Stop the Madness, an anti-drug music video sponsored by the Reagan administration. He first came to wide public notice as a Republican during the 1988 Presidential election, accompanying then Vice President George H.W. Bush at a campaign rally. Attacking Bush’s Democratic opponents, he said to the crowd: “They all look like a bunch of girlie men, right?”
Schwarzenegger’s first political appointment was as chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, on which he served from 1990 to 1993.He was nominated by George H. W. Bush, who dubbed him “Conan the Republican”. He later served as Chairman for the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under Governor Pete Wilson.
In an interview with Talk Magazine in late 1999, Schwarzenegger was asked if he thought of running for office, he replied: “I think about it many times. The possibility is there, because I feel it inside. “The Hollywood Reporter claimed shortly after that Arnold sought to end speculation that he might run for governor of California. Following his initial comments, Schwarzenegger said: “I’m in show business…I am in the middle of my career. Why would I go away from that and jump into something else?”
Movies
The Running Man (1987), Predator (1987), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) (II) Collateral Damage (2002), Eraser (1996), True Lies (1994), Jingle All the Way (1996),
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) ,The Terminator (1984), Twins (1988),Commando (1985), Red Heat (1988) ,Total Recall (1990),The 6th Day (2000), Batman & Robin (1997), Raw Deal (1986), Conan the Barbarian (1982).

Nick Vujicic: A Great Man in the World Take Living Inspiration from Him

0

His name is Nick Vujicic and He give God the Glory for how He has used my testimony to touch thousands of hearts around the world! I was born without limbs and doctors have no medical explanation for this birth “defect“. As you can imagine, He was faced with many challenges and obstacles.
See What He Said
“Consider it pure joy, His Brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds.”
….To count our hurt, pain and struggle as nothing but pure joy? As my parents were Christians, and my Dad even a Pastor of our church, they knew that verse very well. However, on the morning of the 4th of December 1982 in Melbourne (Australia), the last two words on the minds of my parents was “Praise God!”. Their firstborn son had been born without limbs! There were no warnings or time to prepare themselves for it. The doctors we shocked and had no answers at all! There is still no medical reason why this had happened and Nick now has a Brother and Sister who were born just like any other baby.
The whole church mourned over my birth and my parents were absolutely devastated. Everyone asked, “if God is a God of Love, then why would God let something this bad happen to not just anyone, but dedicated Christians?” My Dad thought I wouldn’t survive for very long, but tests proved that I was a healthy baby boy just with a few limbs missing.
Understandably, my parents had strong concern and evident fears of what kind of life I’d be able to lead. God provided them strength, wisdom and courage through those early years and soon after that I was old enough to go to school.
The law in Australia didn’t allow me to be integrated into a main-stream school because of my physical disability. God did miracles and gave my Mom the strength to fight for the law to be changed. I was one of the first disabled students to be integrated into a main-stream school.
The law in Australia didn’t allow me to be integrated into a main-stream school because of my physical disability. God did miracles and gave my Mom the strength to fight for the law to be changed. I was one of the first disabled students to be integrated into a main-stream school.
I liked going to school, and just try to live life like everyone else, but it was in my early years of school where I encountered uncomfortable times of feeling rejected, weird and bullied because of my physical difference. It was very hard for me to get used to, but with the support of my parents, I started to develop attitudes and values which helped me overcome these challenging times. I knew that I was different but on the inside I was just like everyone else. There were many times when I felt so low that I wouldn’t go to school just so I didn’t have to face all the negative attention. I was encouraged by my parents to ignore them and to try start making friends by just talking with some kids. Soon the students realized that I was just like them, and starting there God kept on blessing me with new friends.
There were times when I felt depressed and angry because I couldn’t change the way I was, or blame anyone for that matter. I went to Sunday School and learnt that God loves us all and that He cares for you. I understood that love to a point as a child, but I didn’t understand that if God loved me why did He make me like this? Is it because I did something wrong? I thought I must have because out of all the kids at school, I’m the only weird one. I felt like I was a burden to those around me and the sooner I go, the better it’d be for everyone. I wanted to end my pain and end my life at a young age, but I am thankful once again, for my parents and family who were always there to comfort me and give me strength.
Due to my emotional struggles I had experienced with bullying, self esteem and loneliness, God has implanted a passion of sharing my story and experiences to help others cope with whatever challenge they have in their life and let God turn it into a blessing. To encourage and inspire others to live to their fullest potential and not let anything get in the way of accomplishing their hopes and dreams.
One of the first lessons that I have learnt was not to take things for granted.

A.R.Rahman – The Music Legend of India

0

Allah Rakha Rahman born on January 6, 1966 as A. S. Dileep Kumar in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India is a composer, best known for composing film scores and soundtracks.

Early life and influences
A. R. Rahman is the only son of R. K. Sekhar, a composer, arranger and conductor for Malayalam films. His father died when Rahman was nine years old, and his family used to rent out musical equipment to make ends meet. During early difficulties, an unexplainable illness of Rahman’s sister, Reihana disappeared after a visit by a Sufi saint. This led Dileep to convert to Islam, changing his name to Allah Rakha Rahman.
During these early years, Rahman served as a keyboardist and an arranger in bands with friends, embracing numerous music genres. He played the keyboard and piano, in addition to the synthesizer, the harmonium and the guitar. His curiosity in the synthesizer in particular increased because, he says, it was the “ideal combination of music and technology.” He began training in Carnatic music. At the age of 11, he joined the troupe of Indian composer Ilaiyaraaja as a keyboardist. He later played on the orchestra of M. S. Viswanathan and Ramesh Naidu, and accompanied Zakir Hussain and Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan on world tours. The experience allowed him to obtain a scholarship to Trinity College at Oxford University, where he graduated with a degree in Western classical music.

Other Works
He made an album Vande Mataram (1996) on India’s national song, singing the title song on the album. He followed it up with an album called Jana gana mana, a huge conglomeration of performances by all the leading exponents/artists of Indian classical music.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, a well known composer of musicals, was impressed with Rahman’s unique style and therefore hired him to compose his maiden stage production Bombay Dreams (2002). This play was well received in England. Furthermore, Rahman, along with the Finnish folk music band Värttinä, composed the music for The Lord of the Rings theatre production, which first opened in Toronto on March 23, 2006, a new production of which begins previewing in London at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane from May 9, 2007.
On May 23rd 2006, a two-disc album soundtrack, titled Introducing A. R. Rahman, was released by Times Square Records, featuring 25 songs he composed from Tamil film soundtracks spanning 1993-2001. The compilation soundtrack was well received. Rahman has performed in concerts and tours worldwide. He performed at the Hollywood Bowl amphitheatre in July of 2006, with Indian singers Sukhwinder Singh, Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam, as well as American performing groups Raagapella and Global Rhythms, to a sell out crowd.
Music Style
Rahman’s interest in the works of Classical and Romantic period composers, Carnatic composers, early film composers and predecessors K. V. Mahadevan and Vishwanathan-Ramamoorthy of the Tamil film industry and others continued through his late teens. He further explored and trained in Carnatic music, Western classical, Hindustani music and the Qawalli style of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, in addition to numerous other styles. His interest and outlook in music is said to stem from his love to experiment. As a result, his scores have alternated from songs and themes composed covering a variety of genres, with unconventionally-grouped instruments, and different vocal styles being used and combined together in some of his film soundtracks, to more traditional orchestral themes with leitmotif techniques composed in others. Rahman’s works often feature a mix of minimalist songs and evocative, thematic pieces, building on his differing chord progressions and rhythms. He has written scores and songs with new and varied melodic and percussive sounds from instruments of different music systems. This unique blend he pioneered would come to be known as his avant-garde sound.

Lata Mangeshkar – The Voice of India

0

Lata Mangeshkar born September 28, 1929 is a singer from India. Focusing mainly on Hindi film music, she is considered one of the foremost Indian vocalists of all time. She has sung in over twenty major Indian languages and has been deemed the Nightingale of India, an honorary name also used for Sarojini Naidu and M. S. Subbulakshmi. Popular singer Asha Bhosle happens to be one of her sisters.
Lata Mangeshkar is the only second Indian singer to have received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, the other being M. S. Subbulakshmi. In fact, no other Indian singer of non-classical music has been awarded anything higher than the Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third highest civilian honour as of April 2007.
Childhood
Mangeshkar was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh to a classical singer and theatre actor named Dinanath Mangeshkar and his second wife named Shudhmati Mangeshkar (also known as Mai Mangeshkar). The Mangeshkars were a middle-class Maharashtrian family. Lata was the firstborn child, to be followed by siblings Hridayanath Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar.
Raised in Maharashtra, at the age of 5 Mangeshkar started working as an actress in several plays known as “sangeet nataks” in which her father was performing. Her father also started giving her singing lessons. Dinanath’s recitals and lessons left a strong impression on his daughter, as did the music of K.L. Saigal, who was her father’s favorite singer and her idol.
Filmfare Awards
The Filmfare Awards for playback singing first started in 1958. In 1956, the song ‘Rasik Balma’ from the film Chori Chori won the Best Song Filmfare Award. Lata refused to sing it live in protest of absence of a Playback Singer category. The category was finally introduced in 1958. Though, separate awards for male & female singers were introduced later on.
Lata Mangeshkar monopolized the best female playback singer award from 1958 to 1966. In 1969, Lata made the unusual gesture of giving up Filmfare awards in order to promote fresh talent.
